Background of the Study
Royal palaces are not just architectural marvels but also repositories of history, culture, and tradition. These structures often symbolize the political, cultural, and spiritual identity of a region. In tourism, royal palaces serve as significant attractions, drawing visitors interested in exploring the grandeur and history of monarchies. Kebbi State, located in northwestern Nigeria, is renowned for its traditional institutions and royal heritage. The state boasts a number of palaces that have the potential to serve as key assets for tourism development (Okafor et al., 2023).
Tourism experts have highlighted the importance of leveraging cultural landmarks to enhance local and international tourism. Royal palaces, with their unique architecture, historical artifacts, and cultural practices, offer an immersive experience that appeals to a broad audience (Adamu et al., 2024). However, despite their potential, the palaces in Kebbi State remain underexploited for tourism purposes. Factors such as limited investment in preservation, inadequate promotion, and lack of infrastructure have hindered their ability to attract significant visitor numbers.
Kebbi State’s royal palaces, while rich in history and culture, are not fully integrated into the state’s tourism development strategy. Many of these structures suffer from neglect and lack the necessary facilities to accommodate tourists. Additionally, there is insufficient documentation and promotion of the historical and cultural significance of these palaces, which limits their appeal to both domestic and international tourists (Adeleke, 2023).
This study seeks to address the challenges associated with utilizing royal palaces for tourism development. It aims to evaluate their potential as cultural assets and propose strategies for their effective integration into the tourism sector.
